You could be forgiven for thinking this is during the day. Look more closely and you’ll see the beautiful blue sky decorated by thousands of stars, even when the moon shines so bright.

At the time of Matariki (the Māori new year), the nights are long and cold. These atmospheric conditions give rise to what we call the inversion layer, a layer of cloud or what feels like thick cold dense fog creating a lower temperature ini the valleys and basins than further up the mountain sides.

If you can get yourself above this, especially when the light from the sun is reflected from the full moon, the world around you takes on a very different feel to what we’re more accustomed to.
