Company at the Wharf
The Insta Famous wharf at Lake Te Anau
As much as the popular spots drive me doolally at times, I still keep visiting them when I'm in town. The wharf at Te Anau is one of those places. I've seen countless photographs from here, but I've never actually stood on that wharf, crickey, I didn't even know exactly where it was to be found.
After a very brief Google search, then a quick scope out just to see what I might expect towards sundown, it was soon enough time to return. I really didn't expect to be at the wharf by myself.
Feeling exceedingly spoilt, I heard some voices behind me. A couple were milling around and obviously they wanted to get that shot and here I was right in the middle of the wharf with a tripod. Here in the Southern Lakes, we're having an interesting time with tourists. There are many that come with respect and unfortunately a fair few others who do not. The economic systems aren't in place for tourists to pay for themselves in terms of infrastructure and it's coming down to the residents to pay. I've got to say, it's starting to wear a little thin in places.
There are some that would have just stood their ground, claimed the spot to be theirs. That's not really the feel of the place though is it? Is that really the welcome we want to give tourists? I'd like to think not, so I asked them if they'd like to squeeze past me and then pose at the end of the wharf and I could email them the photos later on.
It feels great to be able to do that. I'm pretty stoked with how it turned out, especially when you think that I spent less than five minutes with them and they're pretty pleased too.
